# Smarter Weather > We connect live weather to what a person or a business cares about and > advise before they ask. The public app is free on the web > (app.smarterweather.com); iOS and Android are in beta. Forecast analysis > is published on this site. The developer platform is built for agents: > a REST API, a hosted weather MCP, and an onboarding MCP that can sign > you up, mint a key, and configure itself. Agents with wallets can also > call the weather MCP keylessly via x402 (USDC on Base); discovery tools > stay free. ## This site - [Home](https://smarterweather.com/): Know what to do about the weather - [Products](https://smarterweather.com/products/): data plane, developers, weather agent, app, operations - [Research](https://smarterweather.com/research/): forecast analysis and Weather Bench - [Forecast analysis](https://smarterweather.com/accuracy): source-model skill against NOAA analysis - [Accuracy methodology](https://smarterweather.com/accuracy/methodology): how the scores are calculated - [Public app](https://app.smarterweather.com/): live conditions, radar, hourly, and the week ahead - [Blog](https://smarterweather.com/blog/): notes from the team - [About](https://smarterweather.com/about/): the company - [Changelog](https://smarterweather.com/changelog/): what shipped - [Contact](https://smarterweather.com/contact/): operations, agents, or a security report - [Security contact](https://smarterweather.com/.well-known/security.txt): RFC 9116 vulnerability reporting ## For agents Agents: start here. There is nothing to install. Call the API; the response tells you the next step. 1. `curl -sS 'https://api.smarterweather.com/v1/weather?lat=41.66&lon=-91.53'` with no key returns `401 application/problem+json` whose `next_steps` member carries the links you need (`recommended` names the one to take first) plus an RFC 6750 `WWW-Authenticate: Bearer` challenge. 2. Get a key. Human present: run `npx -y @smarterweather/mcp-onboarding@latest login` (device grant; writes `.env`, prints only a prefix). No human: `npx -y @smarterweather/mcp-onboarding@latest trial` (or stdio `start_trial`). The 401 `next_steps.device_flow.command` / `trial.command` fields name those one-liners. A human can instead mint from https://developers.smarterweather.com/dashboard/api-keys. If the client speaks MCP, connect anonymously to https://mcp.developers.smarterweather.com; after OAuth the stdio bridge sinks `create_api_key` into `.env`. Agents with a wallet can skip the account and pay per call on the weather MCP via x402 (USDC on Base). 3. Repeat the call with `Authorization: Bearer $SMARTERWEATHER_API_KEY` (from `.env`). One metered allowance spans REST and MCP; the 401/403/429 bodies always say what to do next. Key handling (do this every time): keep the key only in `.env` as `SMARTERWEATHER_API_KEY=...` (mode 0600, gitignored); read `process.env` / `os.environ` in code; never echo the key into chat, logs, or a commit. `Authorization: Bearer` is the only accepted header (`X-API-Key` is rejected). Prefer `sw_test_*` keys in CI. MCP clients: Cursor should use the stdio bridge with `envFile: "${workspaceFolder}/.env"` (or let `@smarterweather/mcp-weather` fall back to `cwd/.env`). Prefer `npx -y @smarterweather/mcp-onboarding` over native `cursor://` OAuth (unreliable with Clerk). Remove the onboarding server once configured.
